According to a release from the U.S. State Department, following the 45-day Congressional notification period, Syria’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism has been lifted. The move comes in concert with already in place rescissions of Syrian related sanctions following the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the subsequent opening of the Syrian economy, and notable efforts to diplomatically reintroduce Syria to the world. Additionally, the group at the head of the offensive to oust former President Assad, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has been delisted as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) group.
