The Washington is the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 5, the U.S. Navy’s permanently forward deployed carrier strike group in the Indo-Pacific. A westbound transit through Singapore puts the group into the Indian Ocean, providing a potential route toward the Middle East without requiring movement through the Strait of Malacca’s eastern approaches in the opposite direction.
