Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are reviewing an air-traffic safety incident Tuesday over Washington, involving Marine One while it was transporting President Donald J. Trump from the White House to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
According to people familiar with the matter who spoke to The Washington Post, on Tuesday afternoon, Marine One, a military helicopter used to transport the President, took off from the White House, but air-traffic controllers hadn’t yet halted commercial flights at nearby Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport as required under safety protocols, in place since the deadly midair collision over the Potomac on January 29, 2025.
During the incident, Marine One and a commercial jet taking off from Ronald Reagan didn’t appear to get dangerously close under federal rules and weren’t converging, indicating the incident didn’t amount to a serious close call, according to a Spokesperson with the FAA. “Marine One flights are piloted by some of the best aviators in the world, and at no point was the President in harm’s way,” said White House Spokesman Kush Desai.
The U.S., Iran, and Oman are reportedly nearing an interim agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, with the Trump administration aiming to announce a deal as soon as Wednesday, according to Axios.
The reported framework would establish a 60 day arrangement under which inbound commercial shipping would transit through Iranian waters, outbound traffic would use Omani waters in coordination with Iran, no transit fees would be charged, and both sides would work to clear naval mines from the strait’s median shipping lane before negotiating a permanent agreement.
If finalized, the deal would mark a significant shift from pre-war arrangements by giving Iran a formal role in managing commercial traffic through the world’s most important oil chokepoint. It would also likely preserve the ceasefire, reopen the door to broader U.S.-Iran negotiations, and avert the large scale U.S. military strikes President Trump has repeatedly threatened in recent days. According to Axios, the agreement was mediated by Oman with support from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, while U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff held direct discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in recent days.
