Falklands tensions escalate as Milei seizes on Trump’s shift in US position

Tensions over the Falkland Islands have escalated after Argentine President Javier Milei announced tougher measures against companies involved in oil development around the territory, as Donald Trump raised the prospect of Washington reconsidering its position on the sovereignty dispute.

Milei used a televised national address to renew Argentina’s claim to the British Overseas Territory, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, and announced plans to strengthen his country’s military presence in the South Atlantic.

Milei said: “Our role and relevance as a country in the world has changed dramatically. The Falklands are our future – we need to recover these islands, which are nationally relevant. There is no other path forward.”

He also announced plans to increase funding for a naval base in Tierra del Fuego and impose tougher penalties on companies involved in oil development around the islands.

“Argentina will not stand idly by,” Milei said. “Any further advance on the Malvinas Islands will be considered a violation of our national security.”

The measures are focused on the Sea Lion oilfield, around 140 miles north of the Falklands.

The project is being developed by Israel’s Navitas Petroleum and Britain’s Rockhopper Exploration. It is estimated to contain around 1.7 billion barrels of oil, with production expected to begin in 2028.

Argentina considers the development an illegal exploitation of resources in waters it claims as its own.

Milei plans to send legislation to Congress to strengthen penalties against companies involved in oil operations without Argentine approval. The proposed measures would also target companies and suppliers supporting the project.

The escalation follows comments by Trump which have raised questions over Washington’s longstanding position on the islands.

Successive US administrations have remained neutral on the question of ultimate sovereignty while recognising British administration of the Falklands.

Asked whether his administration was reviewing that position, Trump replied: “I always review every position. That’s just one of many.”

In an interview with GB News, Trump declined to commit US support to Britain in another conflict over the Falklands and questioned the UK’s ability to defend the islands.

“I just don’t know if you have the capacity to do that,” Trump said.

He added: “The Falklands is very interesting because your country is not the same country it was 20 years ago, 25 years ago.”

Trump also linked his criticism of Britain to the UK’s refusal to participate in the US-led military campaign against Iran.

“Your country was not there to help me,” he told GB News. “We didn’t need help, but I did ask NATO, and I asked your former leader, ‘why didn’t you send a couple of ships?’”

“He said we don’t have any, and it was pretty sad, the whole thing.”

An internal Pentagon email leaked earlier this year reportedly included reconsidering Washington’s position on the Falklands among possible measures against NATO countries which declined to support US operations against Iran.

The islands are not covered by NATO’s Article 5 collective defence guarantee because they fall outside the geographic area defined by the North Atlantic Treaty.

Milei has presented Trump’s willingness to review US policy as an opportunity for Argentina.

“The United States is considering this change of position because it knows that Argentina has a reliable partner,” he said.

He also claimed the “winds of change” now favoured Argentina’s position.

Britain has rejected any suggestion that the status of the islands could change without the consent of the Falkland Islanders.

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said: “Our commitment to the Falklands is absolute and unshakeable.”

On Milei’s comments, Streeting said: “Milei’s statement overnight tells us more about domestic politics in Argentina than it does about the Falkland Islands.”

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said: “The UK’s position on the Falkland Islands is unwavering.”

“The Islands are British and will remain so because that is the overwhelming position of the Islanders,” he added. “Their right of self-determination is paramount, grounded in international law and we will resolutely uphold it.”

Britain has administered the Falkland Islands continuously since 1833, apart from the Argentine occupation during the 1982 war.

Argentina argues that it inherited sovereignty over the islands from Spain following independence and maintains that Britain’s presence since 1833 is an illegal occupation. Britain rejects that position and argues that the islanders have the right to determine their own political future.

The dispute led to war on April 02, 1982, when Argentine forces invaded the islands.

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher sent a British task force to the South Atlantic. Argentine forces surrendered on June 14 after 74 days of fighting.

The conflict killed 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British service personnel and three Falkland Islanders.

The Reagan administration initially attempted to mediate between Britain and Argentina before Washington backed the UK and provided support to the British campaign.

Argentina’s sovereignty claim remains enshrined in its constitution. The United Nations continues to recognise the existence of a sovereignty dispute and has repeatedly called on Britain and Argentina to resume negotiations towards a peaceful settlement.

Britain points to the wishes of the islanders. In a referendum in March 2013, 99.8 per cent of those who voted supported retaining the Falklands’ status as a British Overseas Territory. Turnout was more than 90 per cent.

Argentina rejected the referendum and does not accept that the islanders have a separate right to determine sovereignty.

Milei has previously ruled out using military force to recover the islands and advocated diplomacy while maintaining Argentina’s sovereignty claim.
