Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused Ukraine of a military attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea early Saturday, saying an explosion killed 1 sailor and wounded another.
In a statement, the ministry called the strike a violation of the UN Charter and “a clear instance of an act of aggression” that it said could further inflame the conflict. It noted that the attack had been “explicitly acknowledged” by Ukraine’s leader President Volodymyr Zelensky, and described it as evidence of the “hostile and irresponsible” approach of Kyiv toward Iran.
Stating that Iran “has had no involvement” in the Russia-Ukraine war, the ministry said the strike showed Ukraine had committed an international violation and dangerously widened the conflict. It called on the UN Security Council, European states and the international community to take a responsible position, and said Ukraine’s “governing body” must answer for what it described as a criminal and provocative act.
Tehran said it reserved the right to defend its national interests and security under international law, and that responsibility for the consequences of the Ukrainian leadership’s “adventurism” would fall on Kyiv and “its supporters and instigators.”
The statement followed Zelensky’s announcement Saturday that Ukraine had struck Russian warships and cargo vessels in the Caspian that Kyiv said were carrying military cargo between Russia and Iran. Ukraine’s Security Service named two ships sanctioned by the US, the Port Olya 2 and the Begey, and said it also hit a Lukoil oil platform, according to RFE/RL.
