Dmitry “the Drunk” Medvedev Rants Again
“If the ‘lunatic’ European Union attempts to steal Russian assets frozen in Belgium by issuing a so-called reparations loan, such actions could be classified under international law as a special kind of casus belli, with all the ensuing consequences for Brussels and individual EU countries. And then the return of these funds could occur not through legal proceedings, but through actual reparations paid in kind by Russia’s defeated enemies.”
Dmitry Medvedev’s latest rant over Europe’s plan to use frozen Russian assets for a “reparations loan” is another entry in Moscow’s long catalogue of imaginary red lines. He threatened that treating frozen assets as collateral would become a “special kind of casus belli” (act of war) and promised “consequences for Brussels and individual EU countries.” This is the same script Russia has relied on since 2022. Every Western action is framed as an existential attack and every financial or diplomatic decision is supposedly one inch from war. The problem is that the Kremlin’s the credibility has eroded to the point where the words barely register in the strategic calculus of Brussels or Washington. Russia threatened war if the West armed Ukraine. War if HIMARS were delivered. War if tanks arrived. War if long-range missiles crossed the border. War if F-16s were approved. None of it produced the retaliation Moscow threatened.
But deaf ears do not mean the threats are irrelevant. They reveal something more important. Russia knows the financial weaponization of frozen assets is a real vulnerability and a strategic defeat it cannot reverse on the battlefield. Medvedev’s threat is not confidence. It is panic wrapped in tired rhetoric. If the EU proceeds, Russia suffers a permanent economic wound and a legal precedent that outlives Putin. If the EU falters, Moscow wins a psychological victory and reinforces its belief that intimidation still works. That is the real strategic question. Are European leaders prepared to ignore Moscow’s empty red lines, or will they flinch at yet another round of nuclear-tinged tantrums from a regime that cannot even provide proper winter uniforms to its own infantry?
