ICE says it has arrested Jaan Shah Safi, an Afghan national accused of aiding ISIS-K and supplying weapons to his militia commander father in Afghanistan. Officials say Safi entered the United States during the Biden-era Afghan intake. ICE and Republican allies blame the previous administration’s vetting failures for allowing an estimated 190,000 Afghans into the country before full screening. They say the Trump administration is now trying to address the security gaps.

In case you missed it, Minnesota’s Somali fraud scandals refer to a series of large welfare and social services fraud cases uncovered over the past decade that have cost taxpayers more than $1 billion. Federal prosecutors say most defendants come from Minnesota’s Somali American community of about 80,000 residents. Somali community leaders and Democrats say the issue is being politicized, while investigators cite systemic state oversight failures.
The cases regained national attention recently after President m Trump called Minnesota a “hub of fraudulent money laundering activity” and urged deportations of those involved. Democratic officials, including Gov. Tim Walz and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, rejected the rhetoric and accused Republicans of stigmatizing immigrants.
Feeding Our Future, the largest case, involved between $250 million and $300 million in stolen federal child nutrition funds during the COVID period. Operators used fake invoices for nonexistent meals and moved money through shell nonprofits and hawala networks. A total of 78 people were charged and 59 have been convicted.
A second scheme targeted Medicaid Housing Stabilization Services. Authorities estimate up to $302 million in fraudulent claims between 2021 and 2024. At least 8 defendants, including Somali nationals, were charged for billing the state for housing services never provided.
A third case involved $14 million in autism therapy fraud, built on fake diagnoses and kickbacks to parents. Several defendants are Somali. One conviction worth $7.2 million was overturned in December 2025.
Critics say the Walz administration failed to act on whistleblower warnings since 2021 out of concern over community backlash. State agencies reimbursed claims with minimal verification, leaving federal prosecutors to drive investigations. A 2025 poll showed that 56% of Minnesotans believe the state has not done enough.
The Justice Department has secured dozens of convictions and is reviewing whether some stolen funds may have moved overseas toward terror and extremist groups. Immigration enforcement has increased after Trump ended “Temporary Protected Status” for Somali nationals in November, drawing protests from local leaders.
Somali American advocates acknowledge community involvement in the schemes but warn against collective blame. The scandals continue to fuel political and cultural tensions across Minnesota as federal probes move forward and recovery of stolen funds remains limited.
