The U.S. Coast Guard has released an official statement and a service memorandum by Acting Commandant of the Coast Guard, Adm. Kevin E. Lunday, titled “COAST GUARD POLICY AND LAWFUL ORDER PROHIBITING DIVISIVE OR
HATE SYMBOLS AND FLAGS” which reidentifies symbols like the swastika, noose, or “any other symbols or flags co-opted or adopted by hate-based groups as representations of supremacy, racial or religious intolerance, anti-semitism, or any other improper bias,” as hate symbols, which are prohibited and their display punishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) by the U.S. Coast Guard. This announcement and memorandum follows several articles and reports earlier today about a Commandant Instruction regarding “Harassing Behavior Prevention, Response, and Accountability” (COMDTINST 5350.6A), which was supposed to go into effect December, and appeared to downgrade symbols like the swastika and noose to “potentially divisive” instead of hate symbols, which was their previous designation under the U.S. Coast Guard Civil Rights Manual (COMDTINST M5350.4E).
