According to an exclusive report from Aviation Week, the U.S. Army has ordered its fleet of experimental, high-altitude, business jet-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance aircraft, consisting of the Airborne Reconnaissance Targeting Exploitation Mission Intelligence System (ARTEMIS), the Airborne Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare System (ARES) and the Army Theater-Level High-Altitude Expeditionary Next Airborne Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ATHENA), built into highly-modified variants of the Bombardier Global 6500, to the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) Area-of-Responsibility. The aircraft will be recalled from ongoing deployments to Europe and the Indo-Pacific, tasked with supporting the Trump Administration’s escalating campaign against drug trafficking cartels across Latin America, as well as the Maduro Regime in Venezuela.
