U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s war against facial-hair continues, with the War Department releasing an instruction Monday regarding a memo released in late August, directing commanders to initiate “involuntary separation” for Servicemembers who require a shaving waiver after more than one year of medical treatment, which is estimated to consist of around 10-15% of all Airmen, Guardians, Marines, Sailors and Soldiers currently in the U.S. Armed Forces, most of which are Black Americans who suffer from skin conditions like Pseudofolliculitis Barbae. Hegseth was quoted in the release stating, “The grooming standard set by the U.S. military is to be clean shaven and neat in presentation for a proper military appearance.”
