在現代化改造過程中，舊式砲塔被單戰鬥艙取代，其中配備有夜視光學系統的 BBPU-1 砲塔、30 毫米自動 2A72 加農砲和 7.62 毫米 PKTM 機槍。
此次現代化升級將顯著增強該車輛對抗人力和裝甲車輛的火力。

分析稱，目前約有 3,500 輛基於 BRM-1 的車輛處於儲存狀態，因此隨著俄羅斯尋找運輸進攻的方式，損失的數量將會增加。
值得注意的是，由於老一代專用偵察車在戰場上的作用越來越小，俄羅斯正在對其進行現代化改造，安裝配備30毫米火砲的新型作戰模組。
