This was an era where elderly people were tied to beds in nursing homes, punched a few times, and left for hours. Nursing homes remain. It’s where hospitals actively experimented on people without informed consent. Where the army shot citizens for protesting.

Everything was abusive in the 1950s. The psych hospital was not the only place you were getting beaten – but somehow (the Kennedys’ rage at their sister’s lobotomy) the Psychiatric system suffered while literally everywhere else from schools to homes to churches kept hitting.
