Hungary is setting closer cooperation with Russia. Gaspar Orbán, Viktor Orbán’s son, is heavily involved in Hungary’s part in an odd combat mission in Chad, VSquare claims, as further details emerged on Orbán Jr. privately assisting his father in creating a new national security advisory group. This information came out amid increasing Russia’s activity in Chad, with support for the Idriss Déby Itno regime.
We believe Hungary is highly possible to work on developing a military intelligence hub in Chad, likely to serve Russia’s interests. Bearing in mind Budapest’s migration policy, we consider the goals voiced by the Hungarian mission in Chad, like terrorism fighting and migration control, just a pretext. Hungary is more likely to help Russia skirt sanctions.

We also believe Orbán is keen on the missions in Chad due to the access to uranium deposits. That might be connected to the Budapest nuclear power project, carried out by Russia. Paks Nuclear Power Plant is one of the reasons why Budapest has not joined the sanctions on Rosatom. That way, Hungary is most likely assisting Russia in infiltrating Chad to take control of uranium deposits and restrict access for French business. This goes in line with the Kremlin’s plans to squeeze France out of Africa. Hungary is taking part in this influence operation in a subversive effort that targets other EU and NATO nations. Hungary is going to send some 200 troops to Chad, while rejecting and blocking military aid to Ukraine. That makes the Orbán regime even more likely to act in Kremlin’s favor. Gaspar Orbán visited not only Chad in 2024, but also Nigerthat also features uranium deposits, where Russia-backed military junta is holding the power.
