<p>UK ship design house Steller Systems has performed sea trials of a subscale concept demonstrator intended to prove a novel hullform that could be exploited as the basis for a future high-speed offshore insertion craft.</p>
<p>Funded by the UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) through the Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) Novel Amphibious Craft competition, the demonstrator has “successfully proven the innovative features” of a full-scale craft designed to improve the performance and safety of beach landings, Steller Systems announced on 2 April. As well as revealing details of the trials, the company also released accompanying video footage.</p>
<p>Launched in January 2023 the DASA Novel Amphibious Craft competition has set out to demonstrate and de-risk a series of candidate concepts and innovative technologies potentially applicable to a future Commando Insertion Craft (CIC) planned to enter service later this decade. The CIC has been conceived as a new-generation medium-lift amphibious craft to replace the Royal Marines’ current Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel Mk 5 landing craft.</p>
<p>Under the DASA Novel Amphibious Craft programme, Steller Systems in April 2023 received a 12-month Dstl contract valued at GBP400,000 (USD502,424) for the build and test of a 6 m demonstrator scaled so as to be representative of a larger 19 m offshore insertion craft design capable of delivering personnel and equipment over large distances with minimum fatigue. Construction of the demonstrator was undertaken during mid-2023 in conjunction with an industry team that also included Golden Arrow Marine, SR Structures, GSD Technologies, and EMS Engineered Marine Systems.</p>

<p>Brazilian shipbuilder Itaguaí Construções Navais (ICN) launched the third unit of the Riachuelo-class diesel-electric attack submarine (SSK), S<em> Tonelero</em> (S42), on 27 March.</p>
<p>The launch of the S<em> Tonelero</em> (S42) SSK by ICN (a joint venture between Novonor and Naval Group) took place at the Itaguaí Naval Complex.</p>
<p>The submarine is scheduled to be commissioned for Brazilian Submarine Force Command in May 2025, after the vessel completes successful sea trials, the Brazilian Navy told <em>Janes</em>.</p>
<p>S <em>Tonelero</em> is the third of four Riachuelo-class S-BR submarines purchased in 2009 as part of the Submarines Development Program (PROSUB), within the framework of the French-Brazilian strategic defence co-operation agreement signed in 2008.</p>
<p>The S-BR multi-purpose submarine was designed to fulfill anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, special operations, and intelligence gathering missions.</p>
<p>It has six weapon launching tubes for the MBDA Exocet SM39 Block 2 Mod 2 anti-ship missile and Naval Group F21 heavyweight torpedo.</p>
<p>The first-of-class boat S <em>Riachuelo</em> (S40) and the second submarine S <em>Humaitá</em> (S41) were commissioned in September 2022 and January 2024 respectively. ICN is in the final stages of building the last Riachuelo-class submarine S <em>Angostura</em> (S43). The submarine is scheduled to be launched in 2025 and commissioned in 2026, the Brazilian Navy told <em>Janes</em>.</p>

<p>Major US Navy (USN) shipbuilding programmes are running one to three years behind schedule due in a large part to the lack of a sufficient workforce and supply-chain disruptions, according to a 45-day shipbuilding review of these programmes and USN officials who spoke about the review’s findings on 2 April during a roundtable media discussion.</p>
<p>While some of these issues are “lingering” Covid impacts, Nickolas Guertin, assistant secretary of the navy for research, development, and acquisition, acknowledged during the roundtable that they have become a new normal of the shipbuilding waterfront world.</p>
<p>“The supply chain is different now,” he said, adding some materials must be acquired much sooner than before.</p>
<p>In addition, he said, not only has there been a thinning of the workforce, there has also been a “greening of the workforce” – with veteran workers leaving the ranks and being replaced by younger and less-experienced workers, which also has an impact on waterfront work.</p>
<p>Waterfront woes have had an impact on USN shipbuilding contracted delivery schedules, based on current performance, according to the 45-day shipbuilding review summary released on 2 April.</p>
<p>Columbia-class strategic submarine lead ship <em>District of Columbia</em> (SSBN 826), the USN’s priority shipbuilding project, is now running about 12–16 months behind the scheduled October 2027 contract delivery date.</p>
<p>Block IV Virginia-class attack submarines (SSNs) are running about 36 months behind schedule, while Block V Virginias are running about 24 months behind schedule.</p>
<p>Constellation-class guided-missile frigate lead ship <em>Constellation</em> (FFG 62) is running 36 months behind schedule and Ford-class aircraft carrier <em>Enterprise </em>(CVN 80) is running 18–26 months behind schedule.</p>
