Generally the uptake of oxygen and presence of electrical activity are taken as evidence that the brain is alive.
Then comes the big crunch, the rainy scene where the whole mood completely changes. But still the story-teller keeps his hole card out of sight. When the true nature of what is going on becomes evident, you realize the story is one of the most frightening anyone can imagine, and only then do you really appreciate the quality of the acting.
