In 1913, Congress created the Federal Reserve and began issuing Federal Reserve notes, which became standardized in 1929. Currently, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) prints seven different denominations of bills, ranging from $1 to $100, which are issued by the Federal Reserve Board.
