Artifact of the Week: “Matchbox” Camera This camera was developed and manufactured for use by #CIA’s predecessor, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). The size and shape of a matchbook of that era, it could be disguised by adding a matchbook label typical for the country in which it was to be used. The tiny but rugged camera used 16-mm film and could be operated by “feel.” It was deployed “behind the lines” by World War II resistance personnel for target recording and propaganda photography. Although our museum is not open to the public, we regularly share new artifacts to give you a virtual peek inside.
