@MilHistNow: On this day in 1939, HMS Royal Oak is torpedoed by the German submarine U-47 while at anchor at Scapa Flow. The battleship sinks in 15 minutes; 833 sailors are lost. Each of the U-boat’s crew are awarded the Iron Cross.
