Environmental crimes are often driven by complex financial networks, concealed behind layers of corporate entities and murky investors. However, with the right tools and techniques, it’s possible to shine a light on the forces behind these crimes using open-source intelligence (OSINT). The Pulitzer Center’s Rainforest Investigations Network (RIN) and the Centre for Information Resilience (CIR) will conduct an online event where journalists will explore how OSINT can be leveraged to uncover the investors and financial backers behind illegal deforestation, wildlife trafficking, and other environmental offenses. The event will equip journalists with the skills to track financial links and expose those profiting from environmental destruction. What Participants Will Learn: Introduction to OSINT: tools, techniques, and best practices How to identify and follow financial trails leading to investors Case studies of real-world environmental crimes solved with OSINT Legal and ethical considerations in OSINT investigations Speakers: Glòria Pallarès, investigative Journalist and 2021 RIN Fellow Jenna D., investigator at CIR Jelter Meers, research editor of the Pulitzer Center’s Environmental Investigations Unit Madeleine Ngeunga, africa editor at the Pulitzer Center Why Attend: Gain practical skills in OSINT investigations Learn from experts in environmental journalism and financial investigations Network with journalists focused on environmental crime
