BSDA 2024: ROMARM displays new NATO-calibre assault rifle

<p class=”text-body text-muted small”>Two configurations of the CN-22 were displayed on ROMARM’s stand at BSDA 2024 – a medium version with a shorter 13.5 inch barrel (top) and a standard version with a 16 inch barrel (bottom). (Janes/Sonny Butterworth)

Fabrica de Arme Cugir, a subsidiary of Romania’s state-owned ROMARM holding company, displayed two configurations of its CN-22 assault rifle at the Black Sea Defense and Aerospace (BSDA) 2024 exhibition held in Bucharest between 22 and 24 May.

Development of the CN-22 began in 2023 in response to a requirement from the Romanian Armed Forces for a new NATO-standard service rifle to replace its inventory of Romanian derivatives of the AK-series of assault rifles. The design leveraged work from the earlier CN-20, which was essentially an AK-series rifle modified to accept the 5.56×45 mm NATO-standard cartridge.

As with the CN-20, the CN-22 is chambered for the 5.56×45 mm cartridge and its internal components are largely based on the AK gas-operated system. However, unlike the CN-20 it is configured to allow for fully ambidextrous operation and to accommodate three Picatinny rails for mounting accessories.

According to a specifications sheet that refers to the CN-20 but contains images of the CN-22, the rifle has a minimum effective range of 350 m and a rate of fire of 550 rounds per minute. Excluding its 30-round magazine, the CN-22 weighs 3.5 kg.

Two configurations of the CN-22 were presented at BSDA – a medium version with a 13.5 inch barrel and a standard version with a 16 inch barrel. These barrels are rated for a minimum of 15,000 rounds.

Both configurations of the CN-22 displayed at BSDA were equipped with flip-up iron sights, but they will also be offered with the ACS-X1 magnified red dot optic from Romanian company Stimpex.

BSDA 2024: Hanwha to set up Chunmoo user club and integrate new munitions into its launcher

bsp_75227-jdw-26523.jpeg?sfvrsn=98fe7314

<img class=”invisible” style=”display: none” src=”[images%7COpenAccessDataProvider]bc42308e-57bc-43e0-949e-731ac2c1b57a?sfvrsn=98fe7314_2″>
<div class=”w-100 position-relative”> <img src=”/ResourcePackages/Janes/assets/dist/images/placeholder-16-9.jpg” class=”invisible w-100″> <div style=”background-image: url(“https://www.janes.com/images/default-source/news-images/bsp_75227-jdw-26523.jpeg?sfvrsn=98fe7314_2″)” class=”news-hero bg-center bg-cover position-absolute left-0 top-0 h-100 w-100″>

<p class=”text-body text-muted small”>Hanwha hopes to set up a new user club for its Chunmoo MRL, seen here as a scale model at BSDA 2024, suggesting that it expects the customer base for the system to grow. This will be aided by the integration of new munitions into the system, including the GLSDB. (Janes/Sonny Butterworth)

Hanwha is planning to set up a user club for its K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher (MRL) and integrate third-party munitions into the system,
Janes
learnt at the Black Sea Defense and Aerospace (BSDA) 2024 exhibition held in Bucharest from 22 to 24 May.

Peter JK Bae, vice-president for business development at Hanwha Aerospace Europe, explained that this is in response to the system’s growing user base, particularly in Europe. This would operate in a similar manner to the K9 self-propelled howitzer (SPH) user club, in which representatives from the different operators of the system meet to share their experience and best practices for operating it.

This follows a decision by the Polish Armaments Agency to sign a second contract for 72 K239 Chunmoo MRLs, which Poland has designated as Homar-K, on 25 April. The order also included thousands of missiles, including the 600 mm CTM-290 with a maximum range of 290 km.

UK UAV maker reveals its craft in use by Ukrainian armed forces since 2023

<img class=”invisible” style=”display: none” src=”[images%7COpenAccessDataProvider]284b7ae0-650e-46d7-a071-7259a1dd8688?sfvrsn=3f453cbf_2″>
<div class=”w-100 position-relative”> <img src=”/ResourcePackages/Janes/assets/dist/images/placeholder-16-9.jpg” class=”invisible w-100″> <div style=”background-image: url(“https://www.janes.com/images/default-source/news-images/bsp_75111-jdw-26522.jpeg?sfvrsn=3f453cbf_2″)” class=”news-hero bg-center bg-cover position-absolute left-0 top-0 h-100 w-100″>

Ukraine is operating the UK-developed Windracers Uncrewed Low-cost Transport (ULTRA) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV),
Janes
has learnt.

ULTRA is a tactical UAV designed to support resupply. Speaking to
Janes
on 4 April, Simon Muderack, the CEO of Windracers and Distributed Avionics, revealed that its UAV has been conducting intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and supporting resupply for the Armed Forces of Ukraine since 2023.

Although Muderack did not specify exact dates or the number of aircraft provided,
Janes
understands the UK Ministry of Defence procured the aircraft on behalf of the Ukrainian armed forces, supplying it as aid. A defence source told
Janes
the procurement and supply of ULTRA is part of the UK’s GBP325 million (USD413 million) UAV support programme to Ukraine.

According to
Janes
data, ULTRA is a tactical UAV with a maximum take-off weight of 450 kg, featuring an internal cargo bay that supports a payload capacity of up to 100 kg. The bay can also fit a sensor package for ISR roles, the company said. The system has a nominal endurance of over 12 hours and can automatically take-off and land within 150 m in wet and dry conditions.

Muderack highlighted the autonomous capabilities of the system, saying it enables the UAV to conduct missions at night. Windracers says its autopilot and flight control technology from group company Distributed Avionics is intended to provide connection to the UAV from any location, using beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) and with no single flight computer controlling the aircraft.
